Welcome to the New 1L.

It has been a great start to the new school year.  The children have been working hard and have already got 12 marbles in the jar for being such a good class.

I’m looking forward to feeding those brains with knowledge and seeing them grow.

It will be Sports Day on Tuesday afternoon, weather permitting!  I have asked the children to make sure they have their PE kits in school on Monday so we can have a practice.  They need shorts, top and trainers / plimsolls.

It’s the Parent / Teacher Meetings on Monday.  I still have some times available if you want to see me.  I have posted a list on the door to our classroom.

We had a fun day today.  We all came in spotty clothes to celebrate 200 years of braille.  We started by watching a video about Louis Braille and talked about what it is like to be blind.  We then learnt how to write in braille.  On Friday we looked at a special typewriter that writes brialle and tried special glasses that helped us understand what it is like to be blind or partially sighted.

We had a great day at Willingham Woods.  We started by walking around the woods and looking at plants and insects.  Here we are investigating plants we had found.

We had drawn a map in the classroom the day before, and used our map reading skills to recognise the key features we had drawn.  Here we are at the pond.  We saw ducks, moorhens and dragonflies (Mr Lewis tried to take a picture, but they would not stay still long enough!)

After a long walk we sat down for our lunch.  This picture is taken before it started raining!  When it rained, we put our coats on and sat under the trees.  It only lasted half an hour, then we played.  We had lots of fun in the muddy sand pits!  Mr Lewis warned us that if we got in to trouble for having dirty clothes, it was not his fault!  It was our choice!  A bit later we played Miss Jackson’s game.  We had to find animal cards that had been hidden in the trees and bushes; remember the animal name and then tell Mr Lewis how to spell it.  We did very well, but 1J managed to find all 20 animals before us.

It’s a busy time of the year for teachers, so updating the blog gets put on the back burner.  We have been busy in class.  As well as the normal work, we have been making pirate flags (having designed them first and learnt all about pirates).  We have made pirate hats and every good pirate has a parrot, so we used symmetrical printing to make our own.  We have also made wanted posters (look out for them around the school when you visit).  We first had to learn how to sketch our faces and learnt how to draw an accurate portrait.

We have had a fantastic week.  All of the children in our class have been working really hard.  We have been very considerate and kind.  Other people around the school are saying how well we are doing.  We already have 6 Golden Tickets, so we think we have a good chance of winning the Head Teacher’s Award next week.

We had to go to Mrs Goodhand’s classroom on Wednesday afternoon for PPA time.  Mrs Goodhand thought our class was so good that she told Mr Lewis we deserved a marble!  We were very good in assembly on Thursday, and we got another marble.  It was our last one!

Now we have collected all our marbles (one for everyone in the class), we can have a big treat.  We have to discuss what we want to do and plan what we will need.  Well done everyone who worked togther to get all our marbles in the jar.

We had a golf coach visit today, called Jonathan.  He taught us how to put and chip.  We played some games in teams.  We had a great time.

We have started our pirate topic, and today Ebony brought in a bag of shells she had collected at Cleethorpes.  We spent some time this morning trying to guess how many were in the bag, and then we counted them.  Charley and Ellis were very close with their estimates.

How many do you think there are?

Last week was a bit boring…not for the children, but for Mr Lewis!  I had a lot of assessment to do ready for reports and the end of the year.  The children did a lot of independent work and some playing (lucky them!), whilst I assessed them.

Last term was short so we finished making our homes last week and have now finished a display in the classroom.  The children made a wide range of homes; detached, terraced, mud houses, house boats, gypsy caravans, flats, nomad tents, teepees, houses on stilts, Swiss chalet, and a house covered in grass.  The children painted their homes (their choice!), so if any become architects in future we are in for some very colourful street scenes.

This week we are starting our Pirate and Mermaid topic.  Keep watching for exciting updates!
