SEN (Special Educational Needs)

Special Educational Needs is a broad term that covers everything from physical disability to behaviour. Children are assessed throughout their school life and if there are concerns the teacher will raise these with the parents.

However, it is often difficult to say whether a child in Year 1 has Special Educational Needs or is simply immature. Children who have birthdays late in the school year (after Easter) may not be ready to sit down and work. Often children start to catch up by the end of Year 1 or Year 2. As with most things, don’t panic! I am always available to discuss your child’s progress if you have any concerns.

Children who we have concerns about are initially put onto “School Action”. You will be asked to read and sign a form that tells you why we have concerns and what we intend to do to help your child. Children are then monitored and reviewed during the year. Some children may need to be at “School Action” for just a short time, whilst others may need to be on for longer.

If after monitoring your child is identified as needing more support we will then put them on “School Action Plus”.
